Anyway, you probably already know I´m in love with Garen.
I just feel like sharing the way I play him.
Garen´s awesome. Fact. Why? He has a scarf. No further questions, your Honor.
Anyway, I play him as Tank/DPS hybrid. This is because Garen´s damage output comes from his abilities, mostly from Judgement. So we don´t need AS (attack speed, for those you who doesn´t know), and the normal DPS builds go for AS, Crit and Damage.
So that leaves us with ArP (Armor Penetration). There aren´t many items that offer ArP for abilities. Last Whisper only works on auto attacks (Yeah, it sucks)NOTE: Seems that LW not working on abilities was a bug, and now it´s fixed. So all that´s left is Yoummu´s and Brutalizer. And you can´t stack those items, as the ArP is an unique passive. Sooo, why not give Garen defensive items? That way we can kill and be unkillable.
I like to go 14/16/0
Offense: Deadliness(3), Cripple(1), Sorcery(4), Archaic Knowledge(1), Sunder(3) and Offensive Mastery(2)
Defense: Resistance(3), Hardiness(3), Evasion(4), Nimbleness(1), Harden Skin(3) and Veteran Scars(2)
I don´t feel that the rest of the Offensive masteries are useful on him, and that extra defense is always good
For runes i use:
9 Marks of Desolation
9 Seals of Evasion
9 Glyphs of Focus
3 Quintessences of Desolation
ArP is a must, it will give you an insane early game, granting you many kills.
The dodge chance is really useful, and believe it or not, it can help you get kills. You have Nimbleness, right? Imagine this: you´re chasing a really low enemy, a minion attacks you, you dodge the attack. Speed boost. Kill.
And now about Glyphs. CR is also a must. I prefer the flat CR over the scaling ones. Why, you ask? Well, Garen excels in early and mid game, scaling runes are better in the late game, but you want to end the game before you start becoming less and less useful. Flat CR is the best choice.
However, this is a personal choice, feel free to change whatever you want.
These are personal choices, but I like using Exhaust and Ignite. Always remember to use ignite BEFORE the Demacian Justice. This will prevent really low champs who barely survived your Ult to flash away and escape.
Demacian Justice > Judgement > Decisive Strike > Courage
I always start with Judgement, and I level it up each time I can. If you can´t, go for Decisive Strike. Also make sure to pick your Ultimate as soon as possible, and always level it up as a priority.
I always start with the boots and 3 health potions. You NEED the speed, it´s your best way to initiate and escape right now. The potions help you stay longer in the lane (and with your innate, your HP will go up like crazy).
Craft the normal boots into Boots of Swiftness as soon as you can, because like I said earlier, YOU NEED THE SPEED. By now you should probably have your decisive strike, so you should be able to chase enemies fairly easily.
The next item you should buy is Sunfire Cape. It gives a nice bonus of HP and Armor. Also the constant magic damage together with your Judgement will make farming creeps incredibly easy.
Next, you should go for The Brutalizer. It is quite cheap, and gives what garen needs: ArP, CR and Damage. DON´T GO FOR YOUUMU´S YET.
The next item I like is Aegis of the Legion, as it gives you a nice bonus of Armor, Magic Resist and HP.
Now, we need the extra damage, so you better finish that Youumu´s Ghostblade (Don´t forget to use its active passive to push towers!)
The next item I think is situational:
If the enemy team has some melees that can hurt, buy Randuin´s Omen (Randuin´s Omen is MADE for Garen. HP, Armor, HP regen, CR and a Slow. Amazing)
If they deal serious magic damage, buy Force of Nature.
Now your build should look like:
Boots of Swiftness
Aegis of the Legion
Randuin´s Omen or Force of Nature
The last item I get changes from match to match. Sometimes is a good idea to either buy the one you didn´t make for the 5th item (If you bought Randuin´s, go for Force of Nature, and if you went for Force of Nature, buy Randuin´s)
BUT, if you feel like buying another stuff, here are my other choices:
- If the enemies keep escaping , I buy Frozen Mallet (Slow on hit, HP and Damage). People think it´s not good on Garen, but if you initiate with Decisive Strike the slow will keep em in range for your Judgement. Keep in mind that the slow only works with AUTO ATTACKS, so Judgement will NOT slow.
- If you want to punish even more your enemies, buy Atma´s Impaler. It gives you Armor, Critical Chance, and converts 2% of your maximum health into Attack Damage. 2%? Seems like nothing, but it is a LOT. Let´s do some math:
Base Health at 18: 2183
Sunfire Cape: 450
Aegis of the Legion: 270
Randuin´s Omen: 300
Total: 3203 HP
2% of 3203= 64 Attack Damage.
64 AD, 18% Crit Chance and 45 Armor, only for 2405 gold! Nice.
- If you feel like being an unkillable god, go for Warmogs Armor. Some people say it only works on pure tanks, but the G-Man can wear it quite efficiently. If this is your last item, you should have a nice ammount of Armor and Magic Resist. All the extra Hp Warmog´s gives it´s just Overkill.
- If you´re having trouble with debuffs (such as stuns, fears, taunts and even being suppresed) you should buy Quicksilver Sash. It gives you a nice chunk of Magic Resist for it´s cheap price, and also its active can remove debuffs, even Ignite. It´s like an awesomer version of Cleanse.
