Character Types
League of Legends has so many character that they continue to add on too.
But how do we define them?
What type are they?
If they are a certain type, what does that mean?

For those of you who're at my level, please help me out with listing more characters, & try to give me there main category I should put them under!
Example of what I mean is like Evelynn, I put her under stealth because of her skill, but she is also considered to be an assassin.
Later on if I feel up to it, I will list all characters in all their categories.

Lets go over the general types of Characters you'll see.
  • Tank
  • DPS
    -Melee DPS
    -Ranged DPS
    -Tanky DPS
  • Mage
  • Assassin
  • Stealth
  • Support
    -Healers

Now then, you're probably wondering what they all specifically they are.
& Obviously I'm making this to tell you & explain to you what they are.

Tanks are the characters that initiate the battles. They take very little damage, & some tend to have high HP. There main stats are Armor & Magic Resist. Tanks often build items that revolve around the enemy team; if the enemies have a lot of AP, the tank would get Magic Resist, if the enemy team had a lot of AD the tank would get Armor.
Some Examples: Rammus, Malphite, Amumu, & Shen.

DPS Otherwise known as Damage Per Second. These are the characters that are mainly AD type. They deal heavy damage, & will gain even more Damage as they build there items. This category branches off into 3 divisions, Melee, Ranked, & Tanky.
Melee are hand to hand combat characters that are in the front lines of battle.
Ranged are the characters who're in the back lines, hitting enemies from a far.
Tanky are DPS's that are either melee, or ranged, but most commonly are melee, these types are naturally more "beefy" meaning they're not squishy & can be claimed as "off-tank" types.
Some Examples: Irelia(Melee), Caitlyn(Ranged), Lee Sin(Tanky/Melee), Jarven(Tanky/Melee)

Mages are your typical AP character that deal the most damage with their spells rather than there Auto/Normal Attacks. These mage's excel in Magic Damage, otherwise referred to as AP.
Some Examples: Kassadin, Fiddlestick, Lux, Le Blanc, & Annie.

Assassins are great at hopping out of no where, hitting the enemies with great sudden bursts of high damage, & then skipping away like nothing ever happened. Some assassins will have a stealth skill, but some do not. either way an assassin is ment to deal a great amount of damage, & being able to get away without taking much damage.
Some Examples: Akali, Katarina, & Nocturne.

Stealth characters have a skill that turns them invisible for a certain amount of time. They too are assassins, but I wanted to make them a separate category because, they are able to get away using stealth, not great speed/escape skills. (technically stealth is one, but you know what i mean. Kat has shunpo, nocturne has his shield, akali has her ulti)
Some Examples: Evelynn, Twitch, & Shaco.

Support characters are charcters that preform better in game with a lane partner, there skills consist of buffs, or shields to help out their teammates. Some supports even have an ultimate skill that literally gives there teammates a second chance at life.
Some Examples: Kayle, Zilean, Karma & Orianna.

Healers are a subcategory under Support. As well as supporting, they provide heals to help there teammates from not dieing. Healers do not have to be weak, & squishy, there are some healers that can deal heavy damage as well as providing a good heal.
Some Examples of Characters that have Healing skills..
Taric, Nidalee, Sona, Soraka, Kayle, Karma, & Janna.

Not all, lux is considered a support character as well as morgana, so not all support characters have a heal.

RE: Character Types
Morde and Mundo would come under Tanky DPS, as neither have a stun or taunt.
Morde is also an AP character, a bruiser caster-type; if built like a tank, the enemy team can just ignore him as his DPS isn't significant enough to focus him down. Shen however, can taunt the enemy and keep his team alive - this is the difference between Tanky DPS and Tanks; I remember someone saying Veigar was a better tank than Mordekaiser because he could stun.. though I think that was supposed to be a joke on their part.

If you really wanted to, you could go into Tanky AP such as Mordekaiser, Nasus and Vladmir; Nasus and Vladmir commonly being built defence-heavy.
Excluding the commonly made Morde mistake, there's nothing wrong, spare a few spelling and grammar errors - I'd be happy to correct them for you, if you wanted.

Aha 8D
You've sparked an idea, which would make this thread not the "tl;dr" type.
Thank you for your feedback, & your way of sparking ideas in my head 8]
& don't worry about spelling errors :]

RE: Character Types
I read it all, just to let you know.
If they're not gonna take the time to read it, are they really going to profit from it?

I liked the guide, it would've been nice to read when I started playing, instead of mashing right click and qwerqwerqwer dismally.
I hope a lot of people profit from it.

I inparticularly liked seperation of Stealth and Assassin, as that didn't make sense to me at first. More newbie love needs to be put into LoL, by Riot.

Awwe, Thank you sweetie :]
That means a lot to me.
I really do love helping people out, & I do love playing LoL, but Riot needs to step their game up before I even become an intern there.
But I'm not even there yet, so who knows, maybe during the wait, they'll fix everything.

RE: Character Types
Great guide. This should be stickied on their official forums (if it hasn't already).

I've always wondered, what could go up a full tank team.
Because LoL isn't like Rock Paper Scissors, where Tank > DPS > Mage > Tank is it?
